What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese practice that has been around for thousands of years. According to Chinese medicine, the flow of Qi (the body’s life energy) helps keep the body functioning well. The smooth flow of Qi is possible only when there is a balance between the body's yin and yang--dark and light forces. If the flow is blocked, it can cause imbalance and lead to health issues. Qi flow can be hampered either by structural or hormonal blockages. Examples of these could be a slumped posture, an injury, or a hormonal imbalance. Acupuncture stimulates these blockages until Qi can flow freely through your body.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncturists release blockages by inserting hair-thin needles into specific acupuncture points throughout the body. The needles are single-use, pre-sterilised, and are usually a few centimetres long. There are over 1,000 acupuncture points. Each of these lies on an invisible energy channel called the Meridian. Every meridian is associated with a different organ system. An acupuncturist uses this system of points to restore flow, balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation. There are other techniques a practitioner can use aside from needles. These include cupping, ingesting Chinese herbs, laser treatment (instead of needles), and massage.

What can you expect during an acupuncture session?

Your acupuncture practitioner will usually ask you to either sit or lie down. It's best to wear loose-fitting clothes for your session. So then, it will be easier to give the practitioner access to certain acupuncture points. Depending on the number of symptoms you have, a practitioner may insert several needles during one acupuncture session. Then they may leave the needles for a duration of a few minutes to about half an hour. When the needles are inserted, you may feel a dull tingling, which won't last. There shouldn't be any significant pain. If you experience pain beyond a dull ache, tell the practitioner right away.
