What is Bowen therapy?

Bowen Therapy, also known as Bowenwork or Bowtech was developed in Australia over 50 years ago by Thomas Ambrose Bowen. It’s a holistic technique involving physical manipulation of the soft connective tissue of the body known as the fascia. The fascia envelops, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body. Practitioners' main mode of treatment here involves light touch using small, repetitive movements. With sequences of small movements at varying pressures on specific areas related to the fascia, practitioners stimulate the body’s natural responses. By doing this, they bring about self-healing for both medical and physical conditions. Bowen therapy is a gentle technique that does not use forceful manipulation.

How does it work?

By stimulating the body's natural responses through bodywork, this therapy works to nudge the body toward self-healing. It may also help with emotional conditions. After all, it allows the body’s nervous system to switch from a stress and pain response to responding in a way that promotes rest, relaxation, and repair. As the therapy's small physical motions re-align the fascia, it also adjusts the body's pain reflexes.

What can you expect from a session?

You may experience complete relief from your ailment only after one session. For others, it may take three. It all depends on how your body responds to the therapy. Chronic conditions may take longer to respond. Each session may last between 30 minutes to an hour. Practitioners suggest you show up to the clinic wearing light, loose clothes. Thick clothing may hamper the practitioner's light manoeuvres on certain areas on the body. After each sequence of moves, the practitioner may leave the room for two to five minutes at a time. This allows your body to begin the healing process. So that by the time the practitioner comes back, your body is ready for the next sequence of movements. One thing to remember: give your body time to adjust to the treatment. This means you have to keep from trying other forms of physical therapy for at least a week after a Bowen therapy session. For example, you have to avoid acupuncture, kinesiology, massage, chiropractic, and physiotherapy. Let your body adapt to the Bowen treatment.
