Chiropractic Care

What is Chiropractic Care?
It is an alternative pain treatment that focuses on aligning the structure of the body, specifically the spine. This modality also helps treat conditions that are related to the musculoskeletal system. Additionally, it is often used as a complementary therapy to conventional treatments. A chiropractor's goal is to align the spine to improve its motion and, consequently, your over-all health and well-being. Once a spine is straightened, chiropractors believe the body can work to its full potential and heal itself.
How does it work?
One of the most common treatments a chiropractor uses is an "adjustment." This is the act of manipulating the spine to align it. By doing this, a chiropractor helps ease the pressure on nerves and joints squeezed by misaligned spinal joints. To do an adjustment, a chiropractor applies quick but strong pressure on specific areas of your back and joints. Done regularly, this trains the body to realign itself and function properly. All this is usually done to complement traditional pain treatments. In fact, osteopaths and physiotherapists also use this manipulative therapy.
What can you expect from a session?
Your first session with a chiropractor will start with a discussion of your medical history. You will be asked about medications you are taking, allergies, your diet, even your lifestyle. Once done, the chiropractor will perform a non-invasive physical exam. This may involve taking an x-ray of your spine. Subsequently, for your next visits, you may be asked to lie face down on a padded chiropractic table. This is not unlike a massage table, except that it's designed for chiropractic care. Using their hands, the chiropractor will apply sudden, but controlled, force to specific joints. It's normal to hear small popping or cracking sounds. This means your joints are being pushed back into position. Sometimes, your joints may feel warm or sore after an adjustment. This is just your body regulating itself according to the treatment. You should feel less soreness as your body learns to calibrate itself further into your treatment.
