What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to help treat different ailments and conditions. Using several methods, hypnotherapists induce a hypnotic state to take people's focus out of their immediate environment and onto inner experiences. Once in this trance-like state, people are more receptive to outside suggestions. Also, they become more deeply focused on problems they would like to resolve. People have used hypnotherapy to help treat various conditions. It has moved individuals to quit smoking, nail biting, and even alcohol drinking, among other habits. Additionally, it can help people focus away from physical pain. Hypnosis can also contribute to minimising a person's emotional distress. The therapeutic use of hypnotherapy began in the late 1700s. However, formal studies didn't begin until the 20th century. These studies maintain that hypnotherapy can be a highly effective complementary tool for other therapies.

How does it work?

There are four main techniques hypnotherapists use. First is "relaxation." In the midst of your fears or physical problems, your therapist will verbally guide you toward a peaceful state. They will help you visualise a serene environment where you can be relaxed. Second, there is the "suggestion" technique. While you are in a trance-like state, the therapist may give you gentle suggestions that can induce behaviour changes. For instance, to help you stop drinking, they may suggest alternative productive activities. Some of the activities could be taking walks or picking up a hobby. The third technique gives you coping skills. One effective skill is the "Stop!" technique. For example, when you are confronted by your fears, the therapist may teach you to loudly say, "Stop!" After yelling the word, you think of things other than your fears. With enough hypnotherapy practice, you may be able to use this technique only in your head. You may no longer need to say the word aloud. Fourth and last, the hypnotherapist may guide to explore your past experiences. When did you first experience this trouble you are having? How did you deal with it then? This can help you resolve suppressed emotions.

What can you expect from a session?

The first session would likely last for an hour and a half. You will spend it exploring your past to determine the history of the issue that's troubling you. The hypnotherapist will discuss with you which issues you'd like to resolve, and how you'd like to resolve them. During and after future sessions, expect to feel calm and and acutely aware of your surroundings. You may feel especially positive and confident about the issues that bothered you before.
